About this listing

With five hectares, just as large as the surrounding agricultural parcels, the landscape artwork Aardzee (1982) by artist Piet Slegers is one of the largest artworks in the Netherlands. You enter the artwork via two pedestrian bridges. Among the shelter of the sloping embankments, which roll through the landscape like surging waves, there are paths covered with blue-gray shells, a reference to air and water. The seemingly randomly planted trees enhance the feeling of shelter.

Aardzee feels like an oasis of tranquility in the middle of the open polder. Like a frozen movement of the seabed, it lies between the flat fields. The water level of the water feature is the only horizontal surface between the slopes. With this landscape artwork, Slegers refers to the transformation of the wild Zuiderzee into the serene polder landscape and the dialogue between the elements of earth and water.
