The Hulkesteinse Bos is located in the former river basin of the river Eem. Clay, sand, and peat in the subsoil, together with the varied groundwater level, ensure a rich and diverse vegetation. Go on an exploration tour through one of the hiking and cycling routes, relax on the Laaksestrand, or sit and contemplate at the Laakse Slenk, the prehistoric river that has been reopened. Now that water is flowing again between the trees, many new dragonfly species have appeared in the forest.
On the varied soil of sand, clay, and peat, a diverse forest grows with many different tree species. Especially the southern part of the Hulkesteinse Bos is very diverse, with large forest giants, ponds, and pools teeming with life. Along the Laakse Slenk, cattle graze in the summer to ensure that the slenk does not grow over with forest again. They not only eat grass but also plants with seeds. Where they drop their dung, these seeds germinate into new plants. The beaches on the other side of the dike have a completely different atmosphere. Here you have water and sand and a wide view of the Gelderland coast.
