Artist: Richard Serra. Sea Level (1996) by American artist Richard Serra lies in the middle of the De Wetering landscape park like a level. The two concrete walls run diagonally through the park, which was designed by landscape architect Pieter van der Molen in 1986 with artist Bas Maters. The walls, each two hundred meters long, are diagonally extended on both sides of a canal. At the ends, the walls blend almost imperceptibly into the landscape, while in the middle, at the deepest point of the park, they are several meters high.
Sea Level gives physical meaning to the concept of sea level: without the dikes, the water level would reach the top edge of the walls. Walking along the wall, the artwork evokes the feeling that you are 'going under', only to slowly resurface further down the line.
