Food Forest Zeewolde is accessible to walkers. An information board at the entrance provides some information about the young forest. Young trees and shrubs are scattered everywhere, which will grow into large shrubs and trees in the coming years. Everything is planted around a pond where frogs croak abundantly and sand bees happily fly around.
"A food forest is much more than a forest with edible species," emphasize initiators Evelyn Derksen and Lydia Waterreus. "A food forest is not an oversized vegetable garden with lettuce and spinach. We have planted 200 species of trees and shrubs, both native and exotic. No annual plants, all long-lived species. Approximately half of them are edible crops. The other half is intended for the establishment of a strong forest system. Because that is the essence of a food forest: an ecosystem that can sustain itself. Thanks to the great biodiversity of plants, many species of animals are attracted, including beetles, insects, and butterflies."
